Babala: How This BDO Scam Can
Empty Your Account

Oct 29, 2025 Joselito Bacolod

Imagine this: Nagising ka sa umaga, chineck mo ang email mo, at ito ang bumungad sa'yo—isang urgent security alert mula sa BDO. "We've noticed that your BDO is being used by another device."

Ang unang reaksyon mo? Kaba. Takot. Gusto mong i-secure agad ang account mo. At doon ka mismo nila gustong atakihin—sa iyong panic.

The image above is a real phishing scam currently making the rounds. It’s designed to look legitimate, but it's a trap that can lead to your bank account being emptied. As a developer, it's my responsibility to help spread awareness. Let's break down exactly why this email is fake.

Critical Red Flags

1. Artificial Urgency

Scammers want you to panic. The subject line and "We've noticed..." intro are designed to trigger an immediate emotional response so you stop thinking logically. Real banks rarely use such high-pressure language.

2. Suspicious Details

  • Generic Greeting: Real banks use your full name, not just "Hello".
  • Technical Jargon: Including IP addresses (e.g., 50.60.17.251) is a trick to look "official."
  • Random Location: Addresses like "Gumamela Drive" are often randomly generated to confuse you.

3. The Button Trap

The email asks you to click "Delete Device". This button leads to a fake website designed to steal your username and password.

Reminder: A REAL bank will NEVER ask you to click a link in an email to resolve a security issue.

What To Do

1
Stop & Breathe

Don't let panic take over. Do not click any links or buttons, no matter how urgent it seems.

2
Check the Sender

Look at the email address. It's likely a random Gmail or a misspelled domain, not an official @bdo.com.ph address.

3
Go to the Source

Open your BDO app or type online.bdo.com.ph manually in your browser to check your account safely.

4
Delete & Report

Once you've confirmed your account is safe, mark the email as spam and delete it immediately.
